Ganesh - Elephant Headed Hindu God of Knowledge

In hindu temples Ganesh or Ganapathy is always worshiped first out of respect to this knowledgable deity. Ganesh is the god of knowledge and wisdom but devotees worship this god because he is also the 'remover of obstacles'. One of the stories told to explain why Ganesh has the head of an elephant explains that Parvathi created a son to watch over her privacy while she went for a path. This son of hers refused entry to Parvathi's quarters even to Shiva, her husband, who got very angry and challenged and defeated the boy in battle - cutting off his head. When he was confronted by his wife he realised his error and so quickly summoned his followers to bring him the head of the first animal that they came accross. The followers came accross an elephant and the head of the animal was taken back and placed on the boys body and new life was created.
