Kali - The Dark Goddess

Kali is one of the most misunderstood Hindu deities, thanks to popular Holywood films, but Kali's fierce countenance is more metaphorical. Kali is the feminine destructive force in the Hindu pantheon as she is primarily responsible for the destruction of negativity.

Kali is also usually portrayed blue or black, similar to Shiva, the male equivalent destructive deity. In this line painting I use the lines to define the blackness of the deity as the background black both to highlight the darkness but also to symbolise the black enormity of the cosmos and the dark, fierce and destructive power of nature itself.
